In Jewels from the Sea, Julie Hrnčířová collects small pieces
of glass and plastic found in the sea and smoothed by seawater.
She combines them with seaweed, shells and stones into small assemblages,
which she photographs from very close. Natural and human-made materials camouflage
one another, and the line between them blurs.
The series was shown in 2024 in Woman’s View of the Sea at Nord University in Bodø,
an exhibition pairing women artists with women marine researchers.
Julie’s work was paired with Anja Westram’s research on Littorina sea snails,
some of which appear in the photographs. The sea polishes glass and plastic
over years, and over evolutionary time it also shapes the snails’ shells and genes.
Both projects look closely at small details to show how the sea is changing under
human influence.
